Chapter Nine

Sara hated that she’d acted this way in front of this man. Edward was watching her, his eyes narrowed, and she was sure he was horrified by her actions. She’d been terrified for Hayley. If anything happened to her, Hayley would have no one. Paul couldn’t be depended on to do anything, and that left her with the sole responsibility. It chilled her to even think of Paul being responsible for Hayley.

Edward moved back, putting distance between them, and she did the same. She couldn’t cling to anyone, let alone this man. “Shock?” she asked, recalling his earlier words. “Do you think so?”

“I’m no expert, but that would be my guess.”

Okay, she could live with that as an explanation of why she’d broken down and cried, and had held on to Edward for dear life. She’d accept it, but she didn’t believe it. Not really. There was more going on than she could begin to comprehend, both because of Hayley and because of this man. She looked away from Edward and saw her backpack had slid onto the floor. She reached for it, pulling it back on her lap. “I guess I have too much of an imagination, too,” she said with a sigh as she sat back. “I had horrible images….”

She bit her lip as the horror returned, making her chest tighten. “I’m all Hayley has,” she managed to say.

“Don’t you have any family here or back where you came from?”

“An aunt somewhere in New York, and some cousins that I’ve never met. I never knew my father. He was gone long before I can remember anything, and my mother…” She shrugged. “She’s not a factor in any of this.”

“She’s dead?”

“Oh, no, she’s alive. But she’s…” She didn’t have a clue why she was telling him anything about her mother. “She’s got this new life with a new husband, and he’s younger than her, and having a daughter who’s twenty-eight didn’t sit well with her. Then having a grandchild, well, that about did her in.” She almost laughed remembering her mother’s horror when she found out she’d become a grandmother. “She can’t deal with it. I think she’d do the right thing by Hayley if I was gone, but I don’t want her bringing Hayley up.”

“And your ex wouldn’t volunteer, would he?”

Now she did laugh, but it sounded so brittle. “Paul? No, he’s not in the picture.”

“So, your plan is to either go it alone, or get married to someone who’ll be a father for Hayley?”

“Yes.”

The car slowed and the driver glanced back at Edward. “Sir? We’re getting close to the lady’s house.”

“Good,” he said, the word tinged with what Sara thought sounded like relief.

She looked out the side window, knowing the limousine looked very out of place in her neighborhood. “Do they provide a limo for everyone who works at LynTech?”

“No, of course not, but my car’s…not available at the moment, so I get to use this when I need it.”

“And Andrew comes with it?”

“That’s his job,” he said.
